Music

There is a long tradition of choral music as an integral part of our worship at St Saviour’s.

The choir leads the singing at the 10am service and at occasional Choral Evensongs, as well as at other special services throughout the year. Anthems are sung each week and several settings of the communion service are in use. The repertoire is constantly being expanded and ranges from the 16th to the 21st centuries.

Most of the music is sung to the accompaniment of our recently installed two-manual Wyvern organ which is enabling us to widen our musical repertoire.

In September 2008 the choir will be singing in Berlin at St George’s and at the Marienkirche. This is the first time the choir has toured overseas, and the trip is eagerly awaited.

The choir practices every Thursday: young choir members meet at 19.00 and are joined by the adults at 19.30. A further rehearsal is held at 09.20 on Sundays to rehearse the music for the 10.00 service.

We are affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) and operate the RSCM Voice for Life scheme, which is a structured training programme aimed at developing both individual singers and the choir as a whole.

The choir continues to grow, both in membership (we have a pool of 25 singers) and in the range of music that we are able to contribute to our worship.
